The Disturbing Resemblance: Rising Anti-Semitism Today Mirrors the Prelude to Kristallnacht in 1938

As we bear witness to the ominous resurgence of anti-Semitism across the globe due to the conflict in the Middle East, it’s essential to recognize the alarming parallels with the historical events of 1938 that paved the way for one of the darkest chapters in human history—Kristallnacht. The rise of hatred against Jews is more than a troubling trend; it is an urgent call to action to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself.

In the lead-up to November 9, 1938, a series of events unfolded across Nazi Germany and Austria that set the stage for the infamous Kristallnacht, also known as the “Night of Broken Glass.” This orchestrated violence against Jews resulted in the destruction of thousands of synagogues, businesses, and homes. It marked the onset of a brutal persecution that culminated in the Holocaust.

The events leading to Kristallnacht were marked by a surge in anti-Semitic rhetoric, discriminatory laws, and the dehumanization of Jews. It began with the expulsion of Polish Jews from Germany, escalated to the mass arrests and detention of Jewish men, and culminated in violent attacks on Jewish property and individuals. This brutal night was a turning point in the Holocaust, and it serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of unchecked hatred.

Today, we observe an alarming resurgence of anti-Semitism reminiscent of the events that unfolded in 1938. Anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise, with Jewish individuals facing physical and verbal abuse. Any business owned by Jews or one that supports Israel is being targeted.

Much of this resurgence is occurring on digital platforms, where anti-Semitic propaganda and hate speech find a disturbingly large audience. The power of the internet has allowed these ideologies to spread rapidly and influence vulnerable minds. The rhetoric we witness today eerily mirrors the anti-Semitic propaganda of the past.

Just as in 1938, the role of political leaders in addressing this issue is crucial. The world has witnessed some leaders failing to condemn anti-Semitic acts. Such actions legitimize hatred and create a toxic environment for Jewish communities.

The global nature of this problem calls for a united response. The continued destruction of posters showing the faces and names of those still kidnapped by the terror group Hamas, the blind idiotic statements coming from ignorant college students, threats of violence occurring daily, and the lack of protection for Jews everywhere are creating desperate feelings. Jewish communities worldwide share concerns about their safety, well-being, and the collective memory of the Holocaust.

The resurgence of anti-Semitism is not only a concern for the Jewish community but a warning for all of humanity. It is a stark reminder that history has shown the catastrophic consequences of unbridled hatred. The world must not forget the lessons of the past.

The rising anti-Semitism that we are witnessing today is a deeply troubling echo of the events leading up to Kristallnacht in 1938. It is a stark reminder that history can repeat itself if we do not confront hatred and prejudice head-on. We have a moral duty to stand united against discrimination and intolerance, ensuring that the horrors of the past are never allowed to resurface. The alarming resurgence of anti-Semitism should serve as an urgent global call to action—a call to ensure that we prevent history from repeating itself.

As a child, I used to listen to the stories of what it was like during the time leading up to the Holocaust. It sounded like a story that could never happen in today’s world. Unfortunately, we may be in 2023, but the same hatred of the Jewish People is weaving its way into our society.

Anyone that does not denounce the terror attacks by Hamas against innocent civilians in Israel, the kidnapping of children, women, and men, the beheading of children, the raping of women, and burning humans alive, must ask themselves if they are truly human.
