On Wednesday, Washington witnessed two significant speeches. Both speeches highlighted issues that concern those of us who are deeply worried about the state of our democracy, the growing tenure in the world, and the future of our families.
Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu delivered a powerful address to the House of Representatives, defending Israel’s military actions in Gaza and seeking support from U.S. politicians on both sides of the aisle. Many Democrats chose to avoid Netanyahu’s speech or left early, including Senator Chuck Schumer. Although they represent regions of the country with a large Jewish constituency. Their actions seemed driven by fear of offending the progressive wing of their own party, which supports the Palestinians in Gaza and opposes additional U.S. military aid to Israel.
Representative Rashida Tlaib did attend but was seen holding a sign that labeled Netanyahu a “war criminal” and accused him of “genocide.” Her sign reflected the sentiments of approximately 2,000 anti-Israel protesters outside, five of whom were arrested for breaking into the Capitol Building.
Meanwhile, key Democratic leaders were notably absent. Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumed 2024 presidential nominee, was scheduled to address the historically black sorority Zeta Phi Beta and did not attend Netanyahu’s speech. President Biden was also missing, presumably occupied with preparing for his Wednesday night Oval Office speech where he announced he would be “handing the torch” to a younger generation, lead by Kamala Harris.
Biden’s speech was lackluster, with the president struggling to read the teleprompter. Further showing signs of cognitive decline and basic life abilities. The Democrats would like us to believe he can finish out his last six months in office, while they are busy trying to install their next hand-picked candidate. While his supporters in the media praised his selflessness, others saw a frail leader nearing the end of his political career, possibly unable to last until the convention.
The scenes outside during the protests were disheartening. Protesters vandalized Washington’s Union Station, replacing American flags with Palestinian ones and defacing the replica of the Liberty Bell with antisemitic graffiti. Despite these acts, top Democratic leaders and major liberal media figures offered minimal outrage.
The Democrats continue to warn about the threat posed by Donald Trump to democracy. However, their actions seem contradictory. The forced exit of President Biden by his own party is a case in point. It appears that Biden was pressured by party leaders to step down, making way for Kamala Harris without a democratic vote.
The undemocratic behavior exhibited by the Democratic Party extends beyond the forced resignation of Biden. After securing the 2024 primaries, Biden was effectively removed from the race, denying other candidates who garnered significant support in the primaries any opportunity to advance. This maneuver prevented fair competition and disregarded the voices of many Democratic voters.
This undemocratic behavior is not new for the Democrats. In 2016, party leaders undermined Bernie Sanders in favor of Hillary Clinton. In 2020, they cleared the field for Biden. Now, in 2024, they have essentially replaced a sitting president with his vice president without any public vote.
While Democrats speak of preserving democracy, their actions suggest otherwise. They have repeatedly manipulated internal party politics, sidelining democratic processes in favor of decisions made by political insiders and elites. The real threat to democracy may not be the figure they claim to oppose but the practices within their own ranks from those who are really controlling their political party and the country.
